Confronted with the unimaginable death of Leelah Alcorn, the Greater Cincinnati HRC Steering Committee responded immediately to help our grieving trans community, including myself. Each member of the steering committee was incredibly supportive and provided logistical and financial support for the vigils held at Leelah’s high school and then this past Saturday in downtown Cincinnati at the Woodward Theater.
The Greater Cincinnati HRC steering committee has extended its mission and operated at their very best under incredible pressure and the scrutiny of the world. They have been their best versions of themselves, as has HRC. And for that, I am very grateful.
The Cincinnati transgender community responded to Leelah Alcorn’s death with love, affirmation and compassion. For the Alcorn’s. For everyone. Just as we want to be loved and affirmed living our truth, we understand the power of love and that it can change all things, including human hearts.
Leelah wrote ‘fix society’. It is our society, our communities, and our cities she wants fixed. She’s on our backs and we ALL must stand on her strong shoulders, make tangible changes and bring tangible support to our trans community that has tangible needs.
Thank you HRC for everything you are and do; for me, for Trans* kids and for the Trans* community.
