Sing Out Detroit was established in July of 2008, by four friends who had the desire to sing choral music in a happy, healthy, fun environment – even if that meant just getting together once a week in someone’s living room. The original members were Linda Brincat, RiverLee Farrell, Kim Whitney and Shelli Schimke.

After a few phone calls to interested singers, our membership grew and we needed a larger place to rehearse. St. John’s Episcopal Church, a warm and welcoming host, offered us their choir room. Ryan Hinman, a family member of one of our singers, was perfectly suited and qualified to take on the role of Music Director.

By the Fall of 2008, we had 15 members. We began ourfirst concert season with holiday music, performing at “Five 15” in Royal Oak and for the December “Ties Like Me” meeting. In January 2009, we grew to 21 members and began working on our Spring concert. Five 15 invited us to return for a showcase performance. We then performed at Detroit’s First Unitarian UniversalistChurch.

In June 2009, we sang at the opening ceremony of Motor City Pride, and have performed there each year since then. During our first full year together we joined GALA, applied for our 501(c)(3) non-profit status, formed an interim Board of Directors, and developed a website.  In 2011, Todd Ballou became our Music Director and led us through out June 2015 concert. Our fall 2015 season kicked off with Jeremy St. Martin taking on the role of Music Director, and he led us up until he resigned after our winter concert of 2022 to go back to college and peruse his masters degree. Our recent search for a new director has led us to our current director, Amy Saari, who we hope will be with us for years to come. We have a thriving membership that continues to grow each year as we strive to bring about positive social change with our musical performances.
