Executive Director

Position Summary

The Executive Director provides overall administrative leadership for GALA Choruses, Inc. in pursuit of its mission. Reporting to the Board of Directors through its President, the Executive Director serves as the main strategist and spokesperson for the association, manages association event planning and production including the quadrennial Festival, and builds and strengthens relationships with member choruses and their leaders. The Executive Director provides entrepreneurial leadership, hands-on administrative skill, and leads association fundraising efforts. They guide and supervise a small and flexible team of staff and contracted specialists including an Artistic Director. Cultural competency working with LGBTQ+ leaders, artists, and communities is essential as is a commitment to the organization’s equity, access, and belonging work.

About GALA Choruses, Inc.

GALA Choruses leads the North American LGBTQ+ choral movement. Our more than 190 member choruses and their 12,000 singers look to us for support and leadership. We are dedicated to helping choruses become more effective, both artistically and administratively. We assist emerging choruses and facilitate networking and training for established groups. GALA Choruses’ signature event is our quadrennial Festival, which brings together over 130 choruses and 6000 singers for the world’s largest LGBTQ+ performing arts event.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Membership
    • Develop and refine the value proposition of membership; engage member organizations in the work of the Association
    • Oversee membership renewals and cultivation of new member organizations
    • Serve as a mentor and resource to leaders of member organizations
  • Programs & Events
    • Plan, negotiate, and produce GALA’s quadrennial performance Festival (6000+ participants), the Association’s signature program and largest source of revenue
    • Supervise and collaborate with GALA’s Artistic Director on all artistic planning for Festival and educational programs
    • Guide the team to deliver critical services and support to member choruses and ensure high quality convenings and professional development, including the Leadership Symposium and programs for specific constituent groups including Artistic Directors, administrators, and volunteer leaders.
    • Appropriately scale programs and initiatives to available human and financial resources
  • Financial Management & Operations
    • Ensure that GALA’s financial, investment, and accounting practices follow best practices and minimize organizational risk
    • With staff or vendors, oversee account payables, receivables, and payroll
    • Provide timely budget tracking and cash flow planning
    • With Finance Committee, create and recommend annual operating budget for Board approval; prepare annual report
    • Present a detailed annual operating plan to the Board of Directors
    • Oversee technology and infrastructure needs for the organization; ensure the smooth operations of back end processes including membership database
  • Fundraising & External Relations
    • Serve as a primary fundraising officer for the organization and oversee individual and institutional giving programs
    • Coordinate board and staff fundraising initiatives and activities
    • Serve as primary spokesperson for the Association and represent the mission and vision of GALA Choruses to its members and the general public
    • Represent the organization at relevant national and regional conferences and meetings
    • Oversee brand management and development of a marketing and communications plan to serve the needs of the Association
  • Governance and Oversight
    • In collaboration with the board and within budget, determine and implement an efficient and effective staffing structure to meet the organization’s needs
    • Provide timely and relevant reporting to the Board of Directors
    • Collaborate with the Executive Committee to plan Board of Directors meetings and provide desired reporting
    • Work with Committee Chairs to plan committee meetings and assist with committee leadership and activities as needed
    • Attend all Board meetings; attend Committee meetings as needed. Assist Board leadership in meeting all reporting requirements and adhering to governance best practices

Essential Traits and Characteristics

The Executive Director will possess a resilient and diplomatic leadership style that is able to incorporate wide-ranging input from diverse constituents while remaining focused on shared mission and values. As the primary administrative force in the organization, they understand how to prioritize, multitask, and function simultaneously at the strategic and tactical levels. They will effectively manage, align, and motivate a remote staff and board team. As an engaging spokesperson for the Association, they will energetically embrace the fundraising and public advocacy roles.

  • Additional Key Competencies
    • Within the organization’s current four-year budget cycle, effectively manage risk while encouraging innovation
    • Possess necessary cultural competencies to serve as a national leader in both LGBTQ+ civil rights and arts advocacy spaces
    • Experience leading organizational initiatives on equity, access, and belonging
    • Experience planning and producing large-scale events

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will have five to seven years of senior management experience with a nonprofit organization or demonstrate relevant experience from the for-profit sector. Qualified candidates will have demonstrated experience in fundraising, staff management, and program development. Significant experience budgeting, planning, and producing large scale events is essential. A working knowledge of the LGBTQ+ movement and an affinity for choral music or the arts are both desirable traits. As there is no physical office and staff work remotely, candidates can be based anywhere in the U.S. with reliable internet and communications infrastructure. Travel for select meetings, site research, and association events is required.

Compensation and Benefits

GALA Choruses offers a competitive full time salary range of $100,000 to $115,000 and a benefits package to be negotiated including health care and generous paid time off.
