In our first winter concert since January 2020 Voices Rising comes back strong with Warriors in Song: Fighting for justice, leading with love. The songs of this concert reaffirm our commitment to hold fast, band together, and raise our voices in defense of our rights, our environment, and our diverse community. With music from pop icons Sara Bareilles and Andra Day, we show our strength and resilience; with works of well-known Black composers/activists Alysia Lee and Melanie DeMore, we issue a call to action to halt the systemic violence perpetrated against the Black community; with folk songs of Roy Zimmerman, Tracy Drach, MaMuse, and The Wyrd Sisters, we assert our responsibility to speak up in the face of injustice. You’ll also hear new works by some of VR’s favorite contemporary composers, Andrea Ramsey and Moira Smiley, as well as the Northeast premiere of Catherine Dalton’s “Boxes,” which challenges binary gender categories.
