Description of Position Duties: 

Promote the Chorus' focus on its mission

  • Work with the Chorus, the Board, and volunteers to promote a positive atmosphere of community within the organization
  • Network with other arts organizations, music directors and community groups to increase the visibility of the Chorus and to encourage collaboration

Design, coordinate, and direct Chorus programming

  • Organize a rehearsal schedule at the beginning of each concert year based on the winter and spring concerts, the fall fundraiser and spring Cabaret fundraiser; the schedule also includes a fall and spring Chorus retreat
  • Design each concert performance, including theme development, working to integrate Common Chords (an outreach ensemble), soloists, ensembles, guest artists, musicians, and speakers
  • Identify and hire workshop presenters for vocal clinics and other workshops
  • Contact technicians and musicians for each concert project
  • Serve as staff contact to the Music Performance Committee, ensuring that technical needs, venue contracts, blocking, costuming, and staging details run smoothly
  • Audition, select and coach soloists and small group ensembles

Provide coordination with music related staff

  • Provide general oversight of Common Chords, including auditions and choice of repertoire to assure music fits into the mission of the Chorus
  • Attend (occasionally) Common Chords rehearsals
  • Collaborate with the Chorus Pianist

Coordinate with the Music Performance Committee

  • Meet with the Committee at monthly meetings
  • Organize an annual performance schedule to include annual winter and spring concerts, a fall fundraiser, spring Cabaret, and possible outreach concerts
  • Identify concert themes and collaborations that support the Chorus mission
  • Research appropriate music for the upcoming season
  • Ensure that current season's music is selected and purchased, working with the assistance of Committee members
  • Communicate with the Pianist about the rehearsal list, tempos and other performance details
  • Work with the Committee to secure new arrangements and performance rights where appropriate

Development and Finances

  • Write narrative as needed for concert projects
  • Work with the Fundraising Committee to write grants and prepare grant budget
  • Prepare annual music budget in collaboration with the Board Treasurer

Communicate regularly with the Board of Directors

  • Report to the PHMC Board of Directors
  • Attend Board Meetings and provide a monthly report to the Board
  • Attend and provide input for the annual Chorus retreat

Participate in professional development

  • Participate in GALA professional development opportunities
  • Maintain and update professional competence
  • Review new choral works and recordings, read professional journals, etc.
  • Attend concerts of other choral organizations
Description of Position Qualifications: 

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • BA or Advanced Degree in Music or equivalent conducting experience (minimum 3 years)
  • Experience conducting, educating, or working with a community-based chorus and with singers on various musical skills and experience
  • Leadership skills, working in a team setting
  • Flexibility in working with a diverse group of volunteers and singers
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
