Founded in 1981 as The Brash Ensemble, the NMGMC was one of the first members of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). We strive to be an empowering voice for the GLBT community and to enrich our greater New Mexican community through our choral excellence. We believe that our strength grows as we add voice to voice, and that understanding between people of diverse cultures and orientations blossoms each time we present our musical offerings. Our season runs from September through June and includes three major performances as well as several appearances at community events. Click the Concerts menu above for concert dates.

About the Position

The Artistic Director is responsible for the musical and artistic direction of the Chorus in collaboration with the Artistic Advisory Committee, the Chorus Manager, Production Committee, and Board of Directors. This position is responsible for developing the annual performance schedule, including performance dates and venues, maintaining the presence of the chorus in the community and building unity of purpose among the membership.

Reporting Structure

The position is hired/appointed by and reports to the Board of Directors. The Artistic Director Supervises the Principal Accompanist, Assistant Artistic Director, Assistant Accompanist, Temporary Musicians, Music Section Leaders, and Chorus Manager/President.

Education/Experience

BA in Music preferred, a demonstrated experience in chorale conducting with a wide range of musical knowledge including genres, history and men's choral repertoire. Applicants with prior experience in a leadership role in a nonprofit or volunteer based organization are preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Artistic Advisory Committee, to develop and produce the annual season plan and repertoire selection. Initiates the commissioning of new musical works and arrangements, negotiates agreements from composers, arrangers and orchestrators as required for performances and purchases and rents all music needed for concert performances. Will also conduct the subscription concerts.
  • Responsible for finding and negotiating the appropriate venue for concerts with final approval for the expenses to be given by the Board of Directors.
  • Works closely with the Board of Directors in all aspects of the strategic planning for the organization. Plans the artistic product and the musical needs of the chorus and is responsible for submitting plans to the Board of Directors for future growth of the artistic staff. He/She will work to improve the musicianship, technical proficiency and performance capability of the NMGMC and its individual members.
  • Responsible for auditioning prospective members and conducting weekly rehearsals during each concert period. Will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of rehearsals conducted by other artistic staff in his/her absence.
  • Proposes the annual concert production budget in collaboration with the Production Manager, Production Committee, and the Executive Committee. Upon completion the budget will be forwarded to the Finance Committee for review and approval and then included in the general operating budget for presentation to the full Board of Directors.
  • Collaborates with the Public Relations Committee Chair and/or Committee when representing the NMGMC to the general public, the press, and the Arts Community. He/She will have input into the promotional materials issued by the Chorus with final approval from the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for hiring, supervising and dismissal of all artistic personnel, both contracted and volunteer, with input from the Artistic Advisory Committee. He/She will be responsible for the assignment of duties, supervision, quality control and evaluation of all music and production staff and incidental musicians as required for concert performance. Final budget approval for all hiring will require the Board of Directors approval.
  • Attends meetings of the Board of Directors and serves as an ex-officio (non-voting) member of the Board.
  • Serves as the chorus' artistic representative to GALA and attends meetings, workshops and conferences available through GALA. Expenses for these events are to be approved and included in the annual operating budget of the chorus.

This position is part time on annual contract; hours and days of work are flexible will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Artistic Director
SWFL Gay and Lesbian Chorus, Cape Coral, FL

The non-profit SWFL Gay and Lesbian chorus is seeking the talents of a new Artistic Director! If you fit this bill, come and join the second oldest LGBT organization in SWFL! Our new director will prepare beginner to advanced singers for concerts throughout the year. Traditionally we have a two season year - fall/winter and spring. The director will work with the chorus board on selections of music to be performed. Our fun and enlivening rehearsals in central Fort Myers are on Tuesday evenings and occasionally we have extra "sectionals", based on need.

Our new director will need to be proficient enough on the piano to act as rehearsal accompanist and also guide the normal/performance accompanist. We are looking for a positive, upbeat, good communicator and as with any other cool group, we need you to be patient with us and have fun!!! A member of our LGBT family is preferred. We would love a volunteer but we are not necessarily asking for that, we do have limited funds for compensation.

The chorus is very excited about working toward the upcoming GALA convention in 2012 in Denver! This is an event any Artistic Director would love to represent SWFL at as well as an exciting group such as ours! Don't delay! Music Director
Pro Arte Chorale, Ridgewood, NJ

Duties and responsibilities: The Pro Arte Chorale, a 55-member volunteer chorus based in Ridgewood, NJ seeks a Music Director to begin July 1, 2011. The Pro Arte Chorale's Music Director directs the choir in performance, leads rehearsals, and has the primary responsibility for the musical and artistic development of the group. Working within the budget set by the Board of Trustees, the Music Director determines all musical needs for concerts: selects music in a timely manner; prepares the singers; selects all artistic personnel and performance venues; sets concert and rehearsal schedules; determines and obtains equipment needed for concerts; and directs concert performances. The Music Director reports to the Board of Trustees, is an ex officio non-voting member of the Board of Trustees and works with the Board and the Chorale Administrator to accomplish near-term logistical goals and to develop broad strategic direction for the organization.

Requirements:
Final candidates should expect to prepare the Chorale and conduct one concert.

  • Substantial experience directing choral groups

Chorus/organization description: Founded in 1964, the Pro Arte Chorale has just celebrated its 46th season as one of the Northeast's most prominent choral organizations. The Chorale has appeared in major concert venues across the region including the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the South Orange Performing Arts Center. Throughout its history, the Chorale has also performed in various international venues including, most recently, Mossley Hill Church, in Liverpool, UK. In addition to its own subscription series, the Chorale has appeared with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, Westfield Symphony Orchestra, and the Mark Morris Dance Company. The Chorale rehearses on Monday evenings and presents three or four concerts per year at various locations in northern New Jersey.

Chorus Manager
The Philadelphia Singers, Philadelphia, PA

The Philadelphia Singers (TPS), Philadelphia’s premier professional chorus and The Resident Chorus of The Philadelphia Orchestra seeks a part-time Chorus Manager to oversee all artistic personnel including all non-musical aspects of the ensemble’s concert and rehearsal production, conforming to the terms of TPS’ collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA).

The Chorus Manager facilitates communication between The Philadelphia Singers’ administration, membership and (AGMA). In this capacity, the Chorus Manager is responsible for maintaining a 250+ personnel database of professional and volunteer singers and contracting all singers for The Philadelphia Singers’ subscription concerts, performances with The Philadelphia Orchestra and additional performance opportunities. This individual also hires accompanists, soloists and instrumental ensembles (as needed) for all auditions, rehearsals and performances. The Chorus Manager also submits the payroll for all concert engagements and prepares personnel reports for AGMA.

Essential Functions:

Attend all chorus services including all rehearsals and performances

Obtain all rehearsal venues and coordinate venue preparation prior to the start of rehearsals

Ensure that all rehearsal venues, procedures and rehearsal periods are compliant with the requirements of the CBA with AGMA

Monitor and track attendance at all chorus services including any late arrivals and unexcused absences and initiate disciplinary action as required by the CBA

Communicate frequently with the chorus, informing them of performance opportunities, special events and changes or new information pertaining to the rehearsal and performance schedules

Coordinate with the Music Librarian to ensure the proper delivery and marking of scores

Serve as primary liaison with AGMA and its local delegates at rehearsals and as needed

Prepare budget estimates for contracted services including engagements with The Philadelphia Orchestra and occasionally for subscription concerts

Assist in devising and implementing recruitment efforts for new professional and volunteer singers

Coordinate all aspects of annual auditions including securing the venue and accompanist, publicity, sending out re-audition notices and processing all audition files and applications for new singers

Attend board meetings, special events and fundraisers as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to attend rehearsals and performances that occur in the evenings and on the weekends
  • Proficient in Excel, Access, Word and Outlook
  • Minimum 2 years experience in arts management or engagement management/booking preferred, chorus management experience a plus
  • Familiarity with artists’ contracts and collective bargaining agreements preferred but not required.

Artistic Director
OutLoud Chorus, Ann Arbor, MI

OutLoud Chorus of Ann Arbor, a non-auditioned mixed-voice chorus for the LGBTA community, is accepting applications for the position of Artistic Director. The chorus rehearses on Monday evenings from September to June. This is a part-time, contracted position.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan, design, organize and present two major concerts annually as well as community outreach activities.

Artistic Director

Our GLBTA mixed chorus is small but mighty with 26 years of experience and looking for an Artistic Director who is a capable conductor, artistic director and community ambassador to serve in an approximately 10 hour / week commitment to our chorus.

Duties:

  • Plan, design, organize, and present two major concerts annually as well as community outreach opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to formulate, implement, and monitor annual and long range plans, goals, and objectives for the Chorus.

  • Oversee and encourage direction and further development of River’s Edge, an outreach ensemble within the Chorus.

Knowledge / Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music and three years of choral directing experience.

Artistic Director
Long Island Gay Men's Chorus, Long Island, NY

History:
Long Island Gay Men's Chorus, Inc. was established as a gay male chorus in 2008, currently operates as a 501©3 not-for-profit corporation, and is a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). The LIGMC's inaugural concert was a holiday concert performed at the Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University under the direction of Joseph Barone, our acting Artistic Director. Our first season's membership numbered twenty two and we performed to a sold out audience of 380 men and women of the Long Island community. We are currently at a membership of thirty singers and will be going into our third concert year in the Fall of 2010.

Mission Statement:
To entertain diverse audiences with high-quality male choral performances in order to affirm the contributions and promote a positive image of the gay community.

Qualifications:
Professional choral conducting and related experience required. Preference given to applicants with experience with all men's choirs/choruses. Must have at minimum a Bachelor's Degree in Music. Vocal/Choral Music Degree at the Masters or Doctorate level preferred but not required.

Must have the ability to work with an assistant conductor to plan and lead rehearsals, both sectional and whole chorus.

Must have the ability to teach vocal technique and some music theory to help train singers. Knowledge of foreign languages highly desired. Accompanying/Piano playing ability required.

Must have the experience and ability to communicate and work with a board of directors, Executive Director, and Artistic staff as well as members of the chorus and volunteers.

Must have experience in planning and executing concerts with a wide range of musical styles, be willing to collaborate with music selection committees in the development of programming, and have a skilled ability to develop and operate within a reasonable artistic/production budget.

Experience in building community relationships for the purposes of fund raising and building goodwill in the community a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will be responsible for developing and nurturing the organizations artistic program as well as creating and fostering an atmosphere that is challenging, yet fun, and engaging, in order to bring about musical growth as well as a sense of brotherhood. The Artistic Director reports directly to the organization's board of directors, in particular the President of the board, and has the responsibility of collaborating with an artistic support staff that includes an Assistant Conductor, an Accompanist, a Choreographer, a Production Manager, and Sign Language Interpreters. Operating by, through, and in support of the organization's mission and strategic plan at all times, the Artistic Director plans, designs, organizes and presents two concert seasons comprised of two concerts each, in addition to numerous additional community outreach performances of various sizes. The Artistic Director selects all performance repertoires in collaboration with a music selection committee, auditions new members, determines voice placement of new and current members, and selects soloists, small ensembles, instrumentalists and guest artists. Through regular rehearsals and sectionals, the Artistic Director will monitor and develop member's artistic skills to achieve the musical, performance, and overall artistic standards expected of the organization.

As an ex-officio, non-voting member of the board of directors, the Artistic Director will provide limited administrative duties such as serving on committees as necessary, preparing and proposing and managing an artistic budget in collaboration with the Treasurer of the Board, and enforce organizational rules and standards on the membership. The position will also work cohesively and collectively with the organization's Executive Director in a collaborative manner in support of their role and primary responsibilities. Seen as the organization's management team, both positions will communicate effectively with and in respect of each other, the board of directors, membership and all constituents to promote and broaden the organization's involvement in the artistic, gay/lesbian/ bisexual/transgendered and at large communities. This will be accomplished through positive public relations and outreach efforts, developing and sustaining professional relationships with local, regional and national arts and nonprofit organizations. The Artistic Director will work with the Board of Directors and the Chorus to develop a plan to attend and perform at the 2012 GALA Choruses festival which will be the LIGMC's first GALA Festival attendance. The position is part time and requires 3 hours of rehearsal, once a week on Wednesday nights, plus additional sectional rehearsal as needed once or twice per season. In addition, we hold a weekend rehearsal retreat once per season. Dress rehearsals and technical rehearsals are added as concert time approaches. All hours for rehearsals are scheduled during weekday nights or weekends. The chorus has two seasons per year (September to December & January to June).

Compensation:
LIGMC offers an attractive competitive compensation package that is based on part-time hours. A 1 year renewable contract with a 6 month probationary period will need to be signed upon appointment.

Artistic Director
New Century Singers, Long Island, NY

New Century Singers (NCS) of Long Island, the only Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Straight (LGBTS) auditioned chorus on Long Island, is accepting applications for the position of Artistic Director. The chorus rehearses weekly, 7-9 pm, from September to June. This is a part-time, contracted position, requiring approximately 30 hours per month. Annual compensation is $7000.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and conducting weekly rehearsals, sectionals, and dress rehearsals;
  • Developing chorus members’ musical skills;
  • Selecting music that supports the mission and vision of the chorus;
  • Planning, designing, and organizing two major concerts annually as well as outreach performances;
  • Planning and directing chorus retreats (one per concert season);

Artistic Director
Central Pennsylvania Womyn's Chorus, Harrisburg PA

The Central Pennsylvania Womyn's Chorus, a lesbian and feminist chorus in Harrisburg, PA, is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic Artistic Director versed in a wide variety of musical styles, who will encourage musical excellence and membership growth. Requirements include:

  • 3-5 years experience directing and accompaniment,

Associate Artistic Director
Silicon Valley Gay Men's Chorus, San Jose CA

The Silicon Valley Gay Men’s Chorus (www.svgmc.org) is seeking an Associate Artistic Director to enhance and further advance its artistic vision and standards. This position is responsible to the President of the Board of Directors. This position is supervised and reports to the Artistic Director, the Associate Artistic Director will serve in the capacity of an independent contractor to Silicon Valley Gay Men’s Chorus. It is preferred that Associate Artistic Director should have a minimum of 3 years’ experience directing choral music. Piano skills are also required. The successful candidate should be a highly organized individual who is confident using modern technology and is eager to learn and to assist with the inner workings of a community and mission-based performing arts organization. This position will be reviewed annually as area all staff positions.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend Tuesday night rehearsals (7 – 10 pm) of the chorus. The Associate Artistic Director will be a performing member of the chorus (voicing/section will be determined by need) as well as assist the Artistic Director as needed.
  • Direct a small ensemble of 12-16 voices, specializing in primarily accapella show choir/jazz repertoire. The Assistant Artistic Director will be responsible for scheduling and conducting regular rehearsals for the ensemble outside of the chorus’s Tuesday night rehearsals.
  • Conduct and/or supervise sectional rehearsals for the chorus and small group. as needed.
  • Supervise the section leaders, including communicating absences from rehearsals and performances in advance to the Artistic Director.
  • Produce, and/or supervise the production of rehearsal audio tracks for the chorus.
  • Work with the Music Librarian to maintain the Chorus's music library and assist in retrieval of music, and fulfill requests and inquiries about the Chorus's music library from other choruses. This will also include working with the Artistic Director and the Music Librarian to create and maintain an electronic music data base, to include an electronic copy of all music in the physical library.
  • Work with the General Manager to secure any and all necessary performance rights, recording mechanical licenses and permissions for printed and arranged music.
  • Assist the Artistic Director in evaluating and maintaining the Chorus's music policies and procedures.
  • Direct outreach performances with OutBurst or full Chorus in the community as needed.
  • Attend Board meetings as needed.
  • Engage in open and effective communication through email and telephone correspondence to accomplish the above and related tasks.
  • Act as point person for the Artistic Director as needed.

  • Demonstrated success as a choral director, with formal training in vocal pedagogy and choral literature preferred
  • Acceptance and understanding of diversity in gender expression, race and beliefs
  • Commitment to the mission of IndyChoruses
  • Motivation to inspire the Chorus toward continued creativity and growth, to create a vision for the future and to strive for continued excellence in choral performance

Artistic Director duties are the following:

  • Plan and develop a full season of performances and outreach in coordination with the Chorus, the IndyChoruses mission and its Board of Directors
  • Select music and coordinate events for each performance and outreach activity
  • Schedule and conduct weekly rehearsals for the Chorus and small ensemble
  • Coordinate necessary accompaniment needs for rehearsals and performances
  • Oversee all choral activities as expected by the IndyChoruses organization

Artistic Director
Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, Los Angeles CA

Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, one of the country's most respected male choruses, is looking for a new Artistic Director to lead this thirty-one year old performing arts organization into the next phase of growth. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will enjoy the highly collaborative style of music-making and attention to presentation values which have made GMCLA a beloved part of LGBT communities and the wider social scene in Southern California.

The new Artistic Director will be a consummate musician, an accomplished teacher and a sensitively charismatic leader who will become the public face of GMCLA. An advanced degree in music is preferred. The position is offered with a flexible contract (from part-time to full-time as negotiated) a generous health benefits package, and has an annual salary range (full-time equivalent) of $70,000 - $80,000.
