Afternoon Session 1

1:45 - 3:30 pm
Morning Institutes Continued

"Doing Leadership: From Ideas to Action"
Dr. Ramona M. Wis, presenter

A broadened understanding of the conductor's role as leader is only effective if we take action. In the second of our in-depth sessions, we will look at how the spheres of Vision, Trust, Teaching, Persuasion, and Character translate into decision-making and action. How do we "do" leadership? What concrete actions can we take that will improve our leadership lives and therefore, the lives of everyone we influence with our music?

Afternoon Session 2

3:45 - 5:30 pm

Between Grace and Fear; The Arts and Community Engagement in a Time of Change
Bill Cleveland, presenter

Challenging and exciting times are upon us. More than ever, the building of caring and capable communities demands a citizenry and institutions with the broadest diversity of energy and imagination. In response, many artists around the world are focusing on the issues and stories emanating from the broader community. This talk will explore the history and ecology of the arts and community engagement. It will address the kinds of opportunities and challenges GALA Choruses members will likely encounter when they seek to build bridges across community sectors. Calling upon research conducted in the US and overseas for three recent and upcoming books on subject it will also share some of the ideas, information and learning strategies relevant to chorus and community collaborations that have emerged from the field.
